PS 261
Committee
Supporting curiosity, problem-solving, and hands-on learning across PS 261
The STEM Committee at PS 261 supports science, technology, engineering, and mathematics learning for all students. We partner with teachers to strengthen classroom experiences, help fund and provide materials, and create opportunities for students to explore ideas through hands-on activities. Through science-themed events, volunteer support, and the annual all-school Science Fair, the committee helps make STEM learning accessible, engaging, and grounded in real-world inquiry.
SCIENCE FAIR
Curiosity leads. Creativity follows. Discovery is shared.
The PS 261 Science Fair invites students to develop independent projects aligned with their interests and questions. It is an opportunity for students to explore ideas, test solutions, and share their thinking and learning with the school community.

Student-Led Projects
Students choose topics that reflect their interests and experiences. Projects are not assigned themes; instead, students identify a question or problem they want to explore and develop a project around it. The Science Fair is not required at any grade level; it is an optional extracurricular for learning and fun.
How Scientists & Engineers Work
Projects may take different forms, reflecting real scientific and engineering practices. Students might run experiments to test materials or growing conditions, design and build solutions to everyday problems, or research how natural or human-made systems work. The emphasis is on investigation, testing, and learning through iteration. And it is calibrated for an age-appropriate audience. What a 4th grader may choose to query and share will look different from what a 6-year-old may choose to query and share. The emphasis is on fun and learning.
Process Over Perfection
🔬
Process Over Perfection 🔬
Students are encouraged to document their thinking, explain their approach, and reflect on what they learned. During the school day, the science teacher supports this work by modeling the scientific method and guiding students in communicating their ideas clearly. The Science Fair values the learning process more than the outcome.
Designed to Be Accessible
Projects are intended to be low-cost. Recycled and reused materials are encouraged to reduce expenses and support sustainability. The PTA has funds available to help families who need assistance purchasing supplies. Please contact STEM@PS261BROOKLYN.ORG for support. A lack of supplies should not be a barrier to entry, and there are many resources available to share.
Presenting & Sharing
Students can leave display boards with their science teacher. Any additional materials should be brought on the evening of the Fair. Display boards will be set up for students that night. If you would like to participate but cannot attend the Science Fair, you will have the opportunity to present your project during your science class.
The Science Fair is a moment for students to share their thinking and for the community to see curiosity, effort, and problem-solving on display.

Volunteers Make the
Science Fair Possible
We are seeking parent volunteers to help prepare materials and assist with setup ahead of the Fair. On the night of the event, volunteer "Scientists" are invited to observe projects, ask thoughtful questions, and offer encouraging feedback. All participants get a certificate of completion, and the evening Fair should be fun, engaging, open to all, and celebratory.
