A Description of EVENTS and Fundraisers at PS 261 for the 2016 – 2017 School Year.

Box Tops & Labels for Education – Ongoing. Turn in your box tops and labels to the BOX TOPS box in Heather Weston’s office. Each month the top student will receive a prize and the classroom with the most labels turned in will get a pizza or ice cream party! The annual deadline for turning in box tops is May 1st. Grandparents and other relatives are a great source for this so get collecting!

Dad’s Take Your Child to School Day – September 20, 2016 – Kindergarten Dads! Escort your kids to school and join us in the Library for breakfast.  

Atlantic Antic – September 25th, 2016. We are looking for someone who is interested in organizing an Atlantic Antic committee for the 2017 Antic. Bring a 261 presence back to the ANTIC!

Picture Day October 5 & 6, 2016 –  Kids smile, jump and have fun.  Someone takes their pictures.  Parents don’t have to order until they see the proofs and it is all done online.  No cash exchanged at school and EVERY child is able to be photographed on designated day.  (Retake day TBD).

PS 261 Walks For Breast Cancer! – October 16, 2016 – Join Team Zipp Almost everyone has been touched by breast cancer in some way, so we’ve decided to make a difference by walking and raising money in our local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. Please walk with us and donate what you can. This will be a great PS 261 community event. We need someone to design our Team Zipp T-Shirt! contact  Heather Weston – hweston@ps261brooklyn.org

Applying to Middle School Parents Workshop – October 18th, 8:30am & October 25th, 6pm – This is an informational meeting about the process of applying to middle school. This meeting in intended for 5th grade parents. We are offering a morning meeting and an evening meeting in order to accommodate  all families. The same information will be presented on both occasions, you only need to attend once.

Fall Festival – Saturday October 22nd, 2016 – Our school yard. Games, Food Fun!

Big Apple Crunch – October 24th, 2016 – Every child gets an apple as part of a New York State effort to focus children on healthy eating and the relationship between agriculture and urban life. We try to have related activities and are always looking for help with developing these, apple donations and managing the day’s activities. Contact Rachel Porter to help: rjp13@caa.columbia.edu

Bulb Sale – October 24th through 28th, 2016 – Our garden has been planted with hundreds of flower bulbs. The STEM committee sells daffodil, tulip and other spring-blooming bulbs, as well as indoor winter bulbs,  to raise money for the garden. Parents can buy bulbs for themselves, and can buy bulbs to donate to classrooms. All students in classes to which bulbs are donated will plant those bulbs in the school’s gardens and surrounding tree beds. Character Parade –  October 28th, 2016 – School wide parade where children dress as their favorite literary characters. Some classes pick themes. The kids are adorable and the parents take pics. This event was brought to our school by parent volunteer extraordinaire, Kim Wiley-Schwartz 8 years ago and continues with the love and support of our Librarian, Joy Jacobs. This event is looking for musical support from parent volunteers. That means, you have rhythm and can bang a drum or hit a tambourine while having fun. Trick or Treat for UNICEF – Begins October 28th – For Halloween we make sure that every child gets a UNICEF box for collecting donations when they go trick-or-treating. This is a great way to talk with your children about other places in the world and basic needs, like clean water, education and health care. Our children can support other children across the world. Last year PS 261 kids raised $1548.81! We are partnered with Brooklyn for Peace in this initiative.

Candy for the Troops – November 1st through 4th, 2016 – Have your kids bring in unwanted candy and we will send it to troops overseas. We are partnered with Operation Gratitude. Look for the drop off bucket in the main lobby.

Parent Teacher Conferences – November 3rd, 2016 – ½ day for students. You will meet with your child’s teacher

Election Day Bake Sale – November 8th – If PS 261 is your voting location than awesome! You are already here. If not, don’t fret, you can bake and sell for our biggest bake sale of the year. Contact:

Open Houses – November 9th, December 7th – Prospective Parents tour of PS 261

Taste of Brooklyn – November 10th, 2016  – Join us as we taste wine and food from our best local shops and restaurants throughout Brooklyn. This is our first big off campus fundraiser and we really want and need you there. Contact Alyssa Becker to get involved: cabfrancddv@gmail.com

Food Drive – November 14 –  22, 2016 – A school wide food drive in November to support our neighbors in need. Bring items to school and drop them off in the main lobby. Contact Rachel Porter to get involved: rjp13@caa.columbia.edu

After School Sponsored Turkey Bowl – Saturday, November 19th, 2016 Support our families in need with your food donations — everything from bread to turkeys to salad and pie is welcome. Perishables should be brought to school on November 22 and 23rd.

Kindergarten Harvest Breakfast – November 23rd, 2016 – This is an annual Kindergarten event. The cafeteria is transformed into a food paradise of cultural delights. K families only so don’t even try and sneak in!

PS 261 Gives Snowflake Board – December 12th – 23  – This is an opportunity to make sure that all the kids in the PS261 community get gifts for the holidays. The way it works is the PC matches needs (e.g. 7 Year old Boy – sweater, pants, books) with gifts donated by others in the 261 community. You pick one or more snowflakes off the board and purchase the item(s) listed to be given as gifts to the families. Each year our community provides holiday gifts to about 25 families. It is a great way to spread the joy!

Winter Concert – December 20, 2016

March on Borough Hall – January 20th, 2017 – Our 3rd through 5th Graders create thoughtful protest signs, sing freedom songs while marching to Borough Hall where they give speeches inspired by Dr Martin Luther King Jr.

Schools Out For Summer – February 4th, 2017 – School’s Out Summer Camp and After- School Expo is a one-stop resource for children’s activities. Free to parents, caregivers and kids the fair is designed to help you find the best resources for summer camp, afterschool and enrichment programs.

PS 261 Post Office – February 8, through 14th 2017 – Internal post office right here at PS 261 managed by the students with some help from staff and parents. Arts Day – March 10, 2017 – Arts Day is a day-long, school-wide celebration of the arts for every child in every grade as well as the larger PS261 community of teachers, administrators, and parents. Arts Day includes 5 main components: 1) Random acts of art to greet students in the morning and at pick-up; 2) hands-on workshops presented by a working artist in every single class; 3) arts assemblies presented to all students in the upper and lower grades; 4) a school-wide arts project; and 5) workshops/presentations for parents. Math Night is PI Day! – March 14th, 2017 – Donate a Pie to celebrate everyone’s favorite infinite number: 3.14! The pie sale will be held at pick up, to be followed at 5:30 with Math Night, a family night of fun games and activities that incorporate math concepts and practice. Family Tea – India – March 18th – Janine Taylor hosts a  Family Tea inspired by Indian flavors and traditions. All are welcome to this family event. Contact Janine Taylor to get involved janine882@aim.com

PS 261’s Got Artists’ 2017 Student Art Exhibit & Talent Show! – March 25th – This year the  annual talent show will team up with the Arts Committee to create an afternoon of creative expression by the students of PS 261. Paintings, drawings, sculptures and various artwork will be displayed, converting areas of the school into a gallery for all to see.

Meanwhile, students who have an act they have prepared–dancing, singing, playing a musical instrument, speaking or demonstrating a martial art or similar skill–will have up to two minutes to perform on the auditorium stage, featured as part of the talent show.

Auditions for the talent show will take place a month in advance, with an emphasis on home preparation and parent supervised rehearsals. With your help, this creative festival is an ideal chance for our children to share their emerging talents, on exhibit and stage.

Spring Auction  – March 30, 2017 – Local & city wide restaurants, bars, classes & retail stores donate to the event, on March 30th we gather to eat, drink and BID!!!  This is a event raises a ton (shooting for $75K this year) and needs a lot of participation to make it fantastic (it really is a good time).  Who is a great solicitor?  Web czar?  Graphic designer?  A willing Jack-of-all-trades?  Even though this doesn’t happen until March, the work begins NOW.  contact; Beth Benjamin at benjamin.beth@gmail.com

Earth Day (Almost) Garden Party – March 21, 2017 –  Celebrate Earth Day. PS261 Science teachers and the STEM committee celebrate Earth Day with science stations set up in the garden. Classes visit throughout the morning and at recess. To help contact Rachel Porter: rjp13@caa.columbia.edu

 

Sidewalk Poetry Day – April 28, 2017 – What better way to celebrate National Poetry Month than to  share and celebrate the wonder of poetry. Our kids write poems in chalk all over our school yard and the sidewalk surrounding PS 261.

Family Night – What to Expect Next Year – May 17, 2017 This is an evening when you will meet the team of teachers in the grade your child will be attending in the next school year.

Art Party at the Met Museum – May 27, 2017

As part of PS 261’s partnership with the Metropolitan Museum PS261 parents and families are invited to the museum for hands-on art activities and tours of the collection of Art from the Arab Lands.

Grandparents Day – June 2, 2017 – We welcome grandparents to escort their grandchildren to school and spend time with them in their classrooms. We encourage Grandparents to bring photos of their parents and grandparents and be prepared to share family stories. We will end with a story telling and book making workshop.

Kindergarten Welcome Dinner – June 6, 2017  6pm – The PTA welcomes new families. Introductions to the PTA and committee chairs, school administration and teachers culminates in a community dinner.

5th Grade Party – June 8, 2017 – 5pm to 7pm – NO SCHOOL doesn’t mean the kids can’t dance! A fun party for the outgoing 2017 5th grade class put on by the 5th grade committee.
