Box Tops & Labels for Education – Ongoing – Turn in your box tops and labels to the BOX TOPS box in Heather Weston’s office. Each month the top student will receive a prize and the classroom with the most labels turned in will get a pizza or ice cream party! The annual deadline for turning in box tops is May 1st. Grandparents and other relatives are a great source for this so get collecting!
Fairway Community Partners – Ongoing – Do you or any of your friends or family shop at Fairway? Get cards from the Parent Coordinator. Every swipe at check-out, Fairway gives PS 261 money. No cost, no kidding.
Schoola – Ongoing – Donate clothes to Schoola and choose SP 261 as your school of choice to benefit. A great way to clean out your closets and help our school at the same time. https://www.schoola.com/
Applying to Middle School Parents Workshop – September 12, 8:30 am & September 13, 6 pm – This is an informational meeting about the process of applying to a middle school. This meeting is intended for 5th-grade parents. We are offering a morning meeting and an evening meeting in order to accommodate all families. The same information will be presented on both occasions, you only need to attend once.
Back to School Curriculum Night – September 13th – This evening is a chance for you to meet your child’s teacher. You will get an overview of the year’s lesson plans.
Garden Clean Up – September 16, 2017, 10 am – Come help clean up and ready our beautiful school garden for the Fall season and learn more about our exciting new gardening program.
Outdoor Movie Night – September 16, 2017, & May 31, 2018 – Grab your lawn chairs and blankets and invite your family and friends to this fun event! We will be selling concessions alongside some of our favorite local shops.
Arts Breakfast – September 28th – Join us for coffee and breakfast treats in the garden! This is a chance to find out more about what the Arts Committee does at PS 261 and ways you can get involved to support arts experiences for the whole school community as well as arts integration in the curriculum.
Fall into Fitness Family Fun Day with Fan 4 Kids – October 1st, 10:30 – 12:30 – Join us for Fall into Wellness, a day of Movement, Exercise, Healthy Eats, Nutrition Tips, and Fun with fitness and nutrition educators Fan4Kids!
Picture Day October 12 & 13, 2017 – Kids smile, jump and have fun. Someone takes their pictures. Parents don’t have to order until they see the proofs and it is all done online. No cash exchanged at school and EVERY child is able to be photographed on the designated day. (Retake day November 15).
Family Potluck – October 13, 2017 – Coordinated by the Social Action Committee, the Family Potluck is a fun and easy way to connect with new people and build relationships across all kinds of difference to make our school community stronger and more fun. There are some low key activities for kids and grown-ups and amazing, delicious food!
Fall Festival – Saturday, October 21, 2017- Join us in the PS261 School Yard for an outdoor festival filled with games, face painting, food and fun for all ages.
Big Apple Crunch – October 19, 2017 – Every child gets an apple as part of a New York State effort to focus children on healthy eating and the relationship between agriculture and urban life. We try to have related activities and are always looking for help with developing these, apple donations and managing the day’s activities. Contact Kim Haden: [email protected]
Character Parade – October 27th, 2017 – Schoolwide parade where children dress as their favorite literary characters. Some classes pick themes. The kids are adorable and the parents take pics. This event was brought to our school by parent volunteer extraordinaire, Kim Wiley-Schwartz 8 years ago and continues with the love and support of our Librarian, Joy Jacobs. This event is looking for musical support from parent volunteers. That means, you have rhythm and can bang a drum or hit a tambourine while having fun. Please contact Joy to help; [email protected]
Trick or Treat for UNICEF – Begins October 28th – For Halloween, we make sure that every child gets a UNICEF box for collecting donations when they go trick-or-treating. This is a great way to talk with your children about other places in the world and basic needs, like clean water, education, and healthcare. Our children can support other children across the world. Last year PS 261 kids raised $1548.81! We are partnered with Brooklyn for Peace in this initiative.
Parent Teacher Conferences – November 16, 2017 – ½ day for students. You will meet with your child’s teacher.
Election Day Bake Sale – November 7 – If PS 261 is your voting location than awesome! You are already here. If not, don’t fret, you can bake and sell for our biggest bake sale of the year. Contact: 5th-grade committee
Open Houses – November 8, 2017, December 6, 2017, and January 10, 2018 – Prospective Parents tour PS 261.
Taste of Brooklyn – November 9, 2017 – Join us as we taste food, wine, beer and cocktails from local shops and restaurants throughout Brooklyn. This is our first big off-campus fundraiser and we really want and need you there. Contact Alyssa Becker to get involved: [email protected]
Food Drive – November 13 – 17, 2017 – A school-wide food drive in November to support our neighbors in need. Bring items to school and drop them off in the main lobby.
After School Sponsored Turkey Bowl – Saturday, November 18, 20167 Support our families in need with your food donations — everything from bread to turkeys to salad and pie is welcome. Perishables should be brought to school on November 22 and 23rd.
Kindergarten Harvest Breakfast – November 22, 2017 – This is an annual Kindergarten event. The cafeteria is transformed into a food paradise of cultural delights. K families only so don’t even try and sneak in!
Maker Night and Arts Fair – December 6, 4:30-6: 30 pm – The Arts and STEM Committees team up to bring you this fun evening of art, engineering, and fun! Make your own creative machines and peruse the beautiful handmade work of 261 students and parents for holiday gifts!
PS 261 Gives Snowflake Board – December 12th – 23 – This is an opportunity to make sure that all kids in the PS261 community get gifts for the holidays. The way it works is the Parent Coordinator matches needs (e.g. 7-Year-old-Boy – sweater, pants, books) with gifts donated by others in the 261 community. You pick one or more snowflakes off the board and purchase the item(s) listed as gifts to the families. Each year our community provides holiday gifts to about 25 families. It is a great way to spread the joy!

Mr. O’s Winter Assembly – December 19, 2017 – Performance by the chorus.
March on Borough Hall – January 12, 2018 – Our 3rd through 5th Graders create thoughtful protest signs, sing freedom songs while marching to Borough Hall where they give speeches inspired by Dr Martin Luther King Jr. This year is our 10th anniversary of this march!
Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service – January 15, 2018 – Families come together for a day of learning and service. This is a great, cross-generational chance to put our commitment to social justice into action. Activities and parent- and student-led teach-ins in the morning followed by hands-on service opportunities in the afternoon. Join the Social Action Committee if you would like to help plan this incredible day.
Schools Out For Summer – February 11, 2018 – School’s Out Summer Camp and After- School Expo is a one-stop resource for children’s activities. Free to parents, caregivers and kids the fair is designed to help you find the best resources for summer camp, after-school and enrichment programs. Dollar Book Fair – February 5 through 9, 2017 – We kick off the February Break Read-a-Thon with Books, Books, and more Books! You donate them, then help sort and sell them. Volunteers who love books should contact Jenny Fox [email protected]
PS 261 Post Office – February 12, through 15, 2018 – Internal post office right here at PS 261, managed by 2nd-grade students with some help from staff and parents. Make sure you stop by in the mornings to participate: Send notes and letters to your kids and others in the building. Contact teacher Nickeisha Moore to help. [email protected]
100th Day of School – February 12 (Tentative) – If there is a snow this day this date may change.
Read-A-Thon February 16 through 23, 2018 – Students can keep track of their reading over the February break, and if they like, they can get sponsors and donations for how much they read. The money goes to a good cause: in spring 2017 we donated $4000 to the Malala Fund. Black History Month Assembly – March 1, 2018
Spring Auction – March 12, 2018 – Local & citywide restaurants, bars, clubs and stores donate; on April 12th we gather to eat, drink and BID!!! This event raises a ton for the school (shooting for $80K this year) and requires a lot of participation to make it fantastic (it really is a good time). Know a great solicitor? Web czar? Graphic designer? Willing Jack-of-all-trades? Even though the event doesn’t happen until March, the work begins NOW. Contact Beth Benjamin at [email protected]
Math Night is PI Day! – March 14th, 2018 – Donate a Pie to celebrate everyone’s favorite infinite number: 3.14! The pie sale will be held during Math Night, a family night of fun games and activities that incorporate math concepts and practice. To help contact Heather Noto [email protected]

Talent Show! – March 17, 2018 – This year the talent show will kick off Arts Week! Students showcase their prepared acts — dancing, singing, playing a musical instrument, speaking, or demonstrating a martial art or similar skill. They have up to two minutes to perform on the auditorium stage. Auditions for the talent show will take place a month in advance, with an emphasis on home preparation and parent supervised rehearsals. With your help, this creative festival is an ideal chance for our children to share their emerging talents. Contact: Wayne Isaak, [email protected]
Arts Week – March 19 through 23, 2018 – Arts Week is a week-long, school-wide celebration of the arts for every child in every grade as well as the larger PS261 community of teachers, administrators, and parents. Arts Week includes 5 main components: 1) Random acts of art to greet students in the morning and at pick-up; 2) hands-on workshops presented by a working artist in every single class; 3) arts assemblies for all students; 4) a school-wide arts project; and 5) workshops/presentations for parents. March Madness – March 24, 2018 – Join us for our newest fundraising event which gets our staff/faculty involved. March Madness is a Student and Teacher Basketball game with halftime competitions and giveaways.
Earth Day (Almost) Celebration – March 20, 2018 – Celebrate Earth Day. PS261 Science teachers and the STEM committee celebrate Earth Day with science stations set up in the garden. Classes visit throughout the morning and at recess.

Sidewalk Poetry & Poem in Your Pocket Day – April 27, 2018 – What better way to celebrate National Poetry Month than to share and celebrate the wonder of poetry. Our kids write poems in chalk all over our schoolyard and the sidewalk surrounding PS 261.
Grandparents Day – May 4, 2018- We welcome grandparents to escort their grandchildren to school and spend time with them in their classrooms. There will be coffee, snacks and an assembly in the auditorium.

As part of PS 261’s partnership with the Metropolitan Museum, PS261 parents and families are invited to an art exhibit featuring work created by the students.
Family Tea Celebrating Japan – May 12, 2018 – Janine Taylor hosts a Family Tea inspired by Japanese flavors and traditions. All are welcome to this family event. Contact Janine Taylor to get involved [email protected]
Open School Night – May 17, 2017 – This is an evening when you will meet the team of teachers in the grade your child will be attending the next school year.

Family Picnic – June 9, 2018 – Co-sponsored by the Health and Wellness Council and the Social Action Committee, the Family Picnic is an opportunity to celebrate the school year, play together and strengthen our connections.
Kindergarten Welcome Dinner – June 13, 2018, 6 pm – The PTA welcomes new families. Introductions to the PTA and committee chairs, school administration and teachers culminates in a community dinner.
5th Grade Party – June 7, 2018 – 5 pm to 7 pm – NO SCHOOL doesn’t mean the kids can’t dance! A fun party for the outgoing 2017 5th grade class put on by the 5th-grade committee.
